NZ Police cop big win at the third annual #SMCAKLs
The winners of the 2016 New Zealand Social Media Awards - the #SMCAKLs - were announced at a cocktail event in Auckland on Wednesday, 17 August 2016, where more than 300 of New Zealand’s best and brightest marketing and social media people gathered for the third annual awards evening.
Taking out the supreme award was the New Zealand Police for their “Running Man Challenge” video described by judges as “an absolute viral sensation”, which generated over 30 million views, inspiring remakes from around the world including New York, Scotland, Miami, Hollywood, San Diego, Finland and Australia.
The awards celebrate the very best of social media in the country and this year’s finalists set the bar higher than ever, says judge coordinator Ken Freer - Marketing Director at House of Travel.
“The quality of entries this year was simply outstanding and showed just how much the use of social media in New Zealand has matured. And the fact that many of the campaigns, including the Supreme Awards winners, received global attention, shows what we’re doing here in New Zealand is truly world-class.”
Finalists and winners were decided by an independent panel of judges, including Freer, Simone McCallum, Senior Digital Content and Social Media Manager at ASB Bank; Sara Phillips, Social Media Marketing Manager at ANZ Bank; and Tom Bates, Social Influence Director at Contagion.
The awards are hosted by the friendly people who put on the free monthly #smcakl (Social Media Club Auckland) events, where 200-plus people gather to “meet someone cool, drink something cold, and learn something new” about the latest trends in new media, digital and social.
Event organisers would like to thank the event’s generous sponsors named below, as well as Plus Alpha, Interlike and Blackroom Photography for their support in making the event a success.
